CHILD ABUSE CASES IN THE PHILIPPINES, 2009 AND 2016
My initial plan for my map project was to map out political dynasties, however I could not navigate around on how to get data regarding the matter, and so instead I decided to map out child abuse cases for 2009 vs 2016. I wanted to create this map because I myself am part of a Children's rights organization called CRAdLe (Children's Rights Advocates League) and I wanted to give something to CRAdLe that they could possibly post. Gathering data for this project wasn't easy as the only available resources online were that of 2009 and 2010. Recent data couldn't be found in concerned government websites. This lack of information had me e-mail the Director Rhodora Alday of the DSWD Policy Development and Planning Bureau to be able to acquire this information. A week later they were gracious enough to e-mail me the data for 2016 which has not been published yet. I can confidently say that the most challenging part of this journey was to layout the map well and artistically. I had a certain peg in mind regarding the map, however I couldn't seem to be able to apply it in real life. My coach was able to help me with this as he understood the vision I described and he gave me suggestions as to how I could improve my map. If I learned anything from this, it's that map making should always be a collaborative effort, before you publish it, you must consult with people and have your map subject to criticism to be able to have an amazing map, you cannot simply work alone.
