Tricycle fare in hacienda luisita
The map was intended to give people a background or an accurate representation of how expensive public transportation is Hacienda Luisita. What inspired me to do this is to tell people about one of the current situations I know in my hometown.
The question circulating in the map is how expensive transportation is in Hacienda Luisita. According to Tarlac City POSO, the TODAs in HLI are not regulated by Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB). The TODAs have their own respective tricycle fares. The tricycle fare ranges from Php 30.00-Php 100.00 per one way of travel. According to PSA, the minimum wage per day in Tarlac Province is Php 373.00. It can be inferred that the portion of transportation expenses may reach as high as half of the daily minimum wage.
There are only two jeepney lines present which are San Miguel-DPCH and Tarlac City-Central-Mapalacsiao. The fares costs Php 15.00 and Php 10.00 respectively. An important note about this is that San Miguel-DPCH jeeps travel schedule depends on the school days and school hours of the students of Tarlac National High School (Annex) living in DPCH. Meanwhile, Tarlac City-Central-Mapalacsiao jeeps have a consistent travel schedule throughout the year.
The data was gathered from field interviews in Hacienda Luisita. A tricycle driver, resident, and personal idea about the fares and routes was used for the data. In representing the fares, an open street map for the roads in the Philippines was used. The roads needed to be used in representing the prices and routes were selected one by one. For a better representation of data, two maps were created separately showing the routes and fares.
Because of the expensiveness of the public transportation in Hacienda Luisita, some residents opt to take the alternatives such as biking, acquiring of an owned vehicle/s (particularly motorcycles and tricycles), and walking (regardless of how far the destination is). According to my father, some of the causes of the expensive fares are the inconsistent demand and the not-
well paved roads in the past years. As time passes by, the people in Hacienda Luisita got used to the price level of the fare even though some of the roads were already fixed.
The challenge doing the map project is how to represent the data in a very comprehensive way. What makes it difficult to represent the data is the overlapping routes. Another thing that makes the map challenging to do is to present the routes. The routes used for the map is based on the least possible of the total transportation expenses considering both jeepney and tricycle routes. For the beginner mappers, it will really take a lot of time for someone to accomplish everything for the map. For choosing a topic, it is an advantage if the topic is somehow related to personal experiences or issues within your community. No matter how hard it would be, things will be relatively easier if you know your chosen topic very well. Maps should be aesthetically pleasing but do not forget to apply the all the rules (e.g. labeling, data classification, data representation) in mapping. In creating a map, better have a lot of patience. Maps are easy to look at but not easy to make.
